When an author needs help with character development, plot or storyline for an idea, one often turns to a ghostwriter. While in the past these were hard shoes to fill, now with the internet, there are several companies and individuals providing ghostwriting services for novels and memoirs which can be found online.

Ghostwriting is an art, often used by individuals whom while considered authors have an idea for a story without the ability to write a book or other document in its entirety. Or, by authors whom just do not have time and wish to provide various documents and notations to another writer which can then be organized into book format.

When desiring to hire an individual to do this type work, it is imperative to check references and review portfolios, if one exist. In some cases, individuals may be so new to the area that no portfolio is available. If this is the case, it is often best to request the name of another author whom the individual has worked that can provide a reference.

If going through an agency or online company to hire someone, it can often be beneficial to read a number of different reviews of different ones. In doing so, it is easy for an author to eliminate any which do not fit into the profile, theme, subject or topic at hand. Although, when locating the right agency and individual, it could be a relationship to span a lifetime as most authors create additional works over time.

A few good examples are online writing sites, freelance writing sites and posting sites like craigslist and others. After all, for every great story waiting to be written, there is an author or ghostwriter somewhere just waiting for the chance to tell the story. While this is the case, authors need also remember, generally the higher the pay, the better the writing.

When looking towards these private individuals and posting sites, it is important to get to know the individual over email, telephone or another format such as Facebook or Twitter. It is often still advised to meet anyone one does not know in a public forum such as a coffeehouse or library setting even after having established an online relationship.

While hiring an individual from an agency is often automatic; Before hiring someone online, it is often best to get to know the individual over a site like Twitter, Facebook or private email. For, when an author can communicate on a daily basis, it becomes clear quite quickly whether or not the individual will be a good match for current or future projects based on vocabulary, writing style and personality.

A contract is an agreement that the author and ghostwriter work on together. In fact, it is one of the most important aspects of this type relationship. If a contract or agreement is not signed by both parties, then neither have anything to fall back on related to questions about content, deadlines or pay rate.
