Home The Story Behind Handmade Wood Pens

By Doris Rivas

Most gifts should not be taken for granted. This is because they have hidden meanings that are not obvious to the common mind. For example, a watch signifies a wish for long lives while handmade wood pens can be a reminder to the receiver to keep in touch. Presents may also be used to express feelings of love and gratitude.

Craftsmen have shown pure creativity in designing very adorable writing devices. These are made from wood, bones, animal horns and metal among other materials. Whatever material used, the final product must have an exquisite touch and look. This means that more than average attention must be paid to the finishing process.

The uniqueness of your end product is determined by the quality possessed by the raw material that was used. Most wood turners prefer to use hardwood because it has the ability to withstand stress. Some common examples are the mahogany, aspen and oak among others. The grain of the tree is targeted when the timber is selected because of the beautiful mix of dark and light shades of color.

The next stage is to model the piece. This process is manually done just by using a simple chisel and mattock. The sculptor carefully and slowly chisels the timber until it assumes the desired shape. This could be circular, hexagon shaped, square or any other. In the case of custom-made pens, the shape to be used is determined by the client.

Sandpaper is then used to smoothen out the carving. Several grit of paper can be used until a smooth surface is realized. In some cases, this process can be repeated several times with different courses of sandpaper. Once smoothened, finishing is done for preservation purposes. The finishing also increases the visibility of the grain and introduces water resistant features.

The final touches on the writing implement include fixing of the nib. There are different types of nibs that can be used. These include the roller ball, fountain tip and the ballpoint. The ink cartridge is mounted at this stage. After all this, more decorations can be done before the final product is polished, assessed and dispatched for sale.

The sales are done on different fronts. Some customers place their orders straight to the manufacturers. Such customers always have some specific needs and the work is done based on their instructions. Large businesses and individuals of significance make the most common cluster under this classification. Other big buyers include the many gift shops that place orders from different parts of the world. Bookshops and other retail outlets also provide a significant market.

Given the high prices associated with handmade wood pens, a lot of care must be accorded to them. Caution should be observed when handling them because exposure to extreme conditions can deface them. Some of them can change color when exposed to unfavorable temperatures, moisture and light. It is also advisable not carry them with objects such as car keys and loose change. These objects and scratch them and spoil their unique designs.
