Home Publish Your Own Work Through Personal Book Printing

By Elba McGee

Those who want to publish their own work shall have to think of plenty of things before they can make it happen. For starters, the cost of book printing can go beyond budget if one is not careful. Then there is the layout to worry about. Will the printer accept the format and produce it exactly as you imagined or will it be reader friendly or will it look cheap because of cost efficiency. In the end it is all about trying to publish at the lowest possible cost without sacrificing quality.

Self publication is not an easy task but if you can take simple steps, you should be alright. The first mistake to avoid is overdesigning or under-designing your book and page layout. Something that large scale printing-houses hate with writers is that they tend to overcomplicate simple things. Make something that others will want to naturally pick up and read. Do not make something that looks like a children pictorial book. Finally, make sure that your page size is suitable to publish online.

An important thing with self-publication is the kind of paper you use. Too low cost and you can easily end up with a publication that no one wants to touch or read. Moreover, trying to go expensive will end up giving you a headache over costs of publishing and shipping too. You have to cut a thin line between what kind of paper to use and the total cost.

One more area of concern with pages is the total count. Remember that professionals use blank pages because they can afford it but as a self-printer you cannot do this. It costs money to add even blank sheets at the end so try to be economical with your total page count. Do not add too many blank pages because removing them later on will cost you a lot of money.

Remember the image area when taking prints. With older presses, it is mighty easy to go wrong with prints because you tried to over economize your total cost. The print image area is basically the region on a page that will carry the ink or writing. Usually, margins are left out to the top, bottom, and sides to ensure that nothing gets cut out because the paper was not properly fed into the printer.

For color based book-printing try to stick with CMYK print machines. This is the most affordable and consistent color print machine you shall find and as long as you try to stay away from florescent, metallic, and bright colors, it should work fine.

When using CMYK print try not to use more than four colors for the text and body. Also for the cover, stick to four or less colors as it can become mighty expensive trying out various colors until something works out. Moreover, once you have set the Pantone call outs, do not change them.

Above all, do not make an attempt to publish your book without first talking with a few online bookstores or local stores. Without a proper market, book printing can be a very harrowing and expensive venture.
