Home Jarred Into Being More Active

By Doris Rivas

Jarred Into Being is a tale of a young girl facing her future. In this case she is not sequestered in a safe home environment as one might expect. Instead she is exposed to a harsh world of drugs, sex and slavery. The thrills and excitement that accompany her coming of age make for absorbing reading.

Pat Lawrence is actually a pseudonym for a married couple who have collaborated to produce this and other entertainments. The fact that they have also produced screen plays suggests that they value drama and action as the backdrop for character development.

The main protagonist in the novel is a girl called Eva. The word 'Jarred' suggests a shuddering sort of experience not usually associated with the gentle introduction of a debutant into society. On the contrary, the word has an onomatopoeic quality, suggestive of being jolted to the core by a dull thud. Even the title of the novel suggests that Eva's story will be eventful.

There have been some great heroines in English literature. One thing that is common to most of them is their inclination to say 'yes' to life. In the past there were many customs and conventions that kept women in domestic situations. Though wars, travel and outrageous adventures were open to men women were kept at home and expected to occupy themselves with domestic activities.

This did not prevent heroines like Jane Eyre, Catherine Earnshaw and Elizabeth Bennett from affirming life. They brought extremely active and intelligent minds to the events that they faced. However their roles were almost inevitably passive in the first place. They were acted upon, and then reacted to what had happened. Deep cultural currents seem to imply that there is almost a biological imperative that underlies this. The use of the passive voice in the title of this novel suggests that this literary convention is sustained in the case of Eva.

In his famous soliloquy Hamlet ponders the significance of being. Like millions of young people on the cusp of life he does not know whether to act or allow himself to be acted upon. The verb 'be' in English grammar may be active or passive depending upon the context in which it occurs. When it is used in a construction like 'Jarred Into Being' the last word is the passive voice but the word itself still connotes living an active life. So, even the grammar of the phrase points to the sort of ambivalence that Hamlet wrestled with.

From the beginning of the twentieth century feminism has altered the challenges facing young women as they grow and develop. The philosophy has struggled to open up opportunities for females by altering social conventions that formerly kept them sequestered in domestic roles. In western culture it is now accepted that girls are free to take on roles that were formerly reserved for males. They may be business entrepreneurs, military generals or deep sea divers. With these opportunities come experiences that may shock a person to the core.

Online reviews suggest that Jarred Into Being is an absorbing tale that carries readers through a narrative that is full of action and suspense. In the course of entering imaginatively into the experiences of the protagonist they might also gain insights into some contemporary issues that face young people in the twenty-first century.
