Home Why Write Essays?

By Marina Holland

When students write an essay, they write it usually to impress theprofessor and get a good mark. Unfortunately, this sort of approach toward writing doesn't regularly produce a magnificent essay because, although the teacher will read your essay, it is not only meant for him in the first place.

Understanding Your Readers

Simply put , the teacher is not your principal reader. He's only someone who facilitates the essay writing process and helps you identify the weak parts and the way to improve them. So who are your readers? They're people who are most concerned about the theme you are writing about.

If you're writing about the environmental implications of putting up a textile factory on the city border, then perhaps the people most interested are people who live in the town and its suburbs. An essay about the social history of rap and hiphop music is most interesting to people who listen to these genres. Deciding upon who your readers are and understanding what they'd potentially need to read about takes you halfway to an essay with a clear and superbly defined purpose.

Improving Yourself, the Writer

Writing is not simply something you do to communicate with an audience. It's also a thorough way of talking with yourself. When you start to write an essay on a topic that you may now know anything about, the ideas start to flow in one at a time and you start to learn more about the issue you are writing about. Did you know that the word "essay" comes from the Latin word "exigere"? Which means "to examine"? Therefore , to compose an essay means to look at the issue as well as your thoughts about it.

During the process you also gain a few skills that assist you in improving your thinking. Writing helps you filter valuable info from the fodder and use this information to craft clear and comprehensible statements about the issue. It also improves your capability to understand concepts and create relationships between them. Ultimately, writing enables you to organize your thoughts and present them in a structured and logical manner.
