Home Maneuvering the Fiction Book Publishing Process

By Robin Rohrs

If you want your works of fiction to be published, it takes careful planning and strategizing, among others. You need the right amount of patience, skills and of course, luck when it comes to getting a publisher to say yes to your work.

It is important that you know how to submit the manuscript itself, because that would determine whether you'd ever see it at a bookstore. But this is still easier than publishing non-fiction works, because all you need to do to get fiction proposals submitted is to make sure the work is finished.

If you're an unknown, first-time writer who has yet to successfully publish a book, publishing houses will only entertain your submission if it comes from an agent. Many other writers are submitting their work, and the publishing houses are often lacking people to evaluate the manuscripts.

An agent's fee can cut into your sales if your fiction is accepted, but they'll also be able to drive the best deal and will know the ins and outs of the publishing business and be able to negotiate what's best for you.

If you want to hire an agent to help you publish your work of fiction, you can select from online lists, or from a "Writer's Market" listing that contains the most updated agent listings.

Introduce yourself to the agent in the form of a cover letter which is to be included when you mail them your fiction manuscript. Make sure that your manuscript and cover letter are both free of any errors, may it be typos or spelling errors, and also include a simple, yet complete synopsis of no more than two pages.

Your best friend is your ability to research - if you need help submitting your work, there are many guide books you can read up on, both in traditional and e-book format. Guides also exist that can help you write an effective synopsis.

Send a query letter before anything else if you would rather submit directly to the publishing house. Fiction submission guidelines can be found on the publisher's website or can be requested via snail mail. Make sure you follow each and every guideline or they'll routinely ignore your work no matter how good it is.

Be proactive in submitting what you feel is a great work of fiction - don't be discouraged by the fact that so many people want to get into the writing business these days. A publisher or agent will be much more apt to approve your work for publication if you, the writer and creator, is enthusiastic.
