Home The Infinite Self Tanning Methods

By Haywood Hunter

Self tanning is a convenient way of giving the skin a darker shade. There are many different ways to self tan and for the most part, all of these methods work. Some of them are even highly preferred over tanning in the sun. This is because some of these self tanning methods used are lot easier to access and safer than the sun.

There are many self tanning agents on the market, but of those, the most popular involve: air brushing, tanning beds, pills and lotions. Not all of these self tanning products are recommended and some are not even considered safer than using the sun to tan. Air brushing and lotions probably rank as the safest, while the tanning beds and pills are considered as the least safe of self tanning methods. The information on the methods below will give you a better understanding of their benefits and help you to make a better choice about your self tanning agent.

Lotions: these either change the pigment of the skin or add a light film over it. They come in the form of bronzers that add the film and other types of self tanning lotions that increase the amount of melanin produced in the epidermis, a layer beneath the skin.

Pills: just like some lotions, these cause an increase of melanin production in the epidermis. The way that they do this is not exactly clear and thus many doctors are skeptics on the safety of this particular method. Self tanning pills are also not an approved FDA product and thus consumers should beware of their possible side effects.

Air brushing: this is more like a bronzer than anything else. Using an air brush, someone applies a light film of a self tanning agent unto the skin. This gives a natural and effortless tanned look.

Tanning beds: these are the most unsafe to use for self tanning. They cause the emission of ultra violet rays much like the sun and thus are just as unsafe. Many people hence do not recommend their use.

Numerous self tanning methods exist. It is ultimately up to the consumer what method they will use. However, one must take into consideration that not all the self tanning methods are safe. Choose the safest method, they work just as well as other, less safe methods and will have you looking just as good.
