Home Books With Strong Female Characters

By Mona Diaz

A large number of books have fragile and weak female characters although there are a large percentage of books with strong female characters, where woman are brave, tough and dominate the book.

It isn't the title of the book that defines the the person in the literature and their behaviors but the text as a whole. Teen and young children's books don't have as many feminist leads with strengths. They are more common in today's society however it could be said that strong male leads still dominate literature.

There are countless types of female characters from feminists right through to warrior princesses. It can be argued that it is the reader of the novel that defines whether a character is strong or weak. It can be completely based on personal interpretation. Some classic books to demonstrate this are Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice.

Jane Eyre is a novel about a woman's struggles to adulthood. The novel has a slightly dark quality. Being a strong feminist Jane is very willing to speak her mind. She corrupts all the Victorian ideals of how women should behave and rules they should adhere to. She shows great mental strength. With her refusals to rely on a man and her resistance and strive for independence she is a strong character.

Elizabeth Bennett, the main character in Pride and Prejudice has a slightly different spin to Jane Eyre. Elizabeth is not quite the typical feminist. She shows other strengths although similarly she speaks her mind. She does not adhere either to the portrayals of women at that time.

There are many different ways to how strength in a character. It is mainly left to the reader to determine their own views on what they think is a strength. Whether it is shown through patience or boldness there are many different forms to portray. It can be written in fact or in fiction and can be shown in different ages and be for readers that scope different ages.
